Taiwan vs. China, the One China Policy

from NTDChinaUncensored

The One China Policy is the rather tenuous agreement between Taiwan, the Republic of China, and Mainland China, the People’s Republic of China, that there is only one China. The problem is, they both claim to be that one China. That’s made China’s position on the UN Security Council a bit awkward. Taiwan used to be the China on the Security Council but in the 70’s, after the Cold War cooled a bit, China took the place as China. Confused? Yeah, me too. Just watch the episode and you’ll figure it out.

Australia Suggests Path For Peace Between China and U.S. With Joint Military Exercises

from NTDonChina

It is an Idea whose time has long come. Joint military exercises in the area with the People’s republic of China, Australia and the United States of America. Not that it will happen right away, although there is no reason why it should not as it would contribute to foster a sense of peace in the area, but there is more benefits to a cooperative understanding of the mutual goals of the sovereign states than a hostile one.

Let’s hope we can see this through for the sake of peace and harmony.

“In the coming decade our cooperation will continue to grow. Over time we would like to see this extend to trilateral exercises including the United States.”

Xi Jinping New Helmsman Of China Communist Party

from xinhuanet.com Video from

China’s Vice President Xi Jinping was today appointed as the new General Secretary of the ruling Communist Party, succeeding President Hu Jintao who retired as the head of the Party and the powerful military after a 10- year stint.

Xi, 59, was formally unveiled today by the state media which quoted the outcome of the meeting of the all important Politburo Standing Committee of the CPC.

As per the constitution of the party, the top leadership retires every ten years and a new set of leaders are unveiled to lead China, the world’s second largest economy.

While the new leader would take charge of the Party from today, he would formally take over the government from March next year, when the national legislature called the National People’s Congress (NPC) holds it annual session.

Until then Hu and other leaders would continue in their Government posts.

Rising from a village head to a state leader, Xi carries the tag of a “hereditary” communist for being the son of a former Deputy Prime Minister, who was later persecuted by party founder Mao Zedong.

His father Xi Zhongxun who served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1959 to 1962, fell out of favour with Mao for his moderate views and relegated to obscurity. He was reportedly also imprisoned for sometime.

Xi Zhongxun also later publicly condemned the events of Tiananmen Square in 1989 in which thousands of students were killed. He was rarely seen after that.

Besides being the son of a former top Communist leader, Xi became well known in China after he married Peng Liyuan, a famous Chinese folk singer who was widely popular in 1980s.

Members of the Standing Committee and Politburo are chosen by Party’s new Central Committee comprising of 205 members and 171 alternate members.

Besides the Congress which meets every five years, the Central Committee is the supreme policy making body.

The new Committee was elected “through secret ballot” on the last day of the week long 18th Party Congress.

Holiday Inn Express Beijing Airport

from

Steve and I needed one night in Beijing after arriving from Chicago and before flying the next morning to Guilin. Making connections on the same day makes us nervous, and it was a good thing we did allow an extra night; our United Airlines flight was quite late.

All I want to do after a 14-hour flight is to fall in bed, and the Holiday Inn Express Beijing was only a 15-minute ride from the airport. This new Holiday Inn Express was gorgeous with spacious rooms, pleasant personnel, and the always included buffet breakfast. Our problem was finding a taxi to take us here; they hate to wait in long airport lines for a short ride! A good night’s sleep and back to the airport with no problem getting a taxi from here to there.
